What are Physiatrists and How Can They Help Me?
Physiatrists are pain management specialists who work to restore physical function in patients who are suffering from painful spine disorders. In order to be a physiatrist in the United States, an individual is required to complete four years of medical school, one year-long internship, and three more years of residency. Many people associate physiatrists and chiropractors, but they are two very different specialists. Although the spine is the area of focus for both types of practice, physiatry combines the use of medications, physical modalities, physical training, therapeutic exercises, adaptive equipment, and assistive devices to treat their patients. Pain management specialists may also perform electrodiagnostics such as electromyographies to provide information on a patient’s nervous system function. This test helps with the pain management specialist’s diagnosis and prognosis. Peachtree Spine’s physiatrists typically specialize in back and neck disorders, but are willing to treat other parts of the body that have developed chronic pain. The most common conditions treated by our pain management specialists include herniated discs, lumbar and cervical radiculopathy, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, facet joint syndrome, post-laminectomy syndrome, coccydynia, whiplash, personal injury, and work related injury. If you are suffering from any of these conditions and are looking for relief, please contact one of our offices to proceed with treatment.
